SROI

Social Return on Investment (SROI) is one of the participatory planning and monitoring tools that ICS started to use in 2007. In collaboration with one of our partners, Context International Cooperation, pilots on the SROI framework were conducted on the Grain Storage Scheme in Tanzania, and on the Water and Sanitation Project in Kenya.

Experiences from the first trials suggest that the framework can be used by local communities as an instrument to help them predict the impact on desired change objective on selected initiatives, and prioritise the use of thier scarce resources based on thier expected return on investment.

Situational analysis

In order to establish baseline information, identify the key problems and understand the views and opinions of communities and government officials, ICS carried out a situtaional analysis in each District that forms its program areas: Busia, Teso and Meatu.

Once the specific Clusters and Committees had been identified, each school and community went through a Participatory Child Rights Situational Analysis (PCRSA)in 2008. It was an intensive process where different groups of children

''Thank you for letting us analyse our environment. I did not know much about the problems the school was undergoing. I was surprised to know that many of the problems the school is facing are issues related to homes. For example, many children are orphans, therefore they do not have parental support, and we as a community have not responded to the needs of such children.''
