Child Protection

CRiSIP, as the initial framework to realize Civic Driven Child Development, aims to realize the right to education for all children, taking the school as the starting point. However, many children cannot be reached through the formal school system, while the school does not always offer the best meeting place when it comes to issues of child abuse and neglect.

The Child Protection (CP) Programme aims to address the obstacles for children to access education. This includes aspects related to the school situation, as well as outside the school boundaries.

The CP Programme consists of three components.

  • Awareness raising and capacity building. Many people in the regions where ICS is active either lack the knowledge on how to support children in the right way, are ignorant of legal mechanisms to protect children or fear legal action to be taken against child abusers (who are often relatives).

  • ICS and/or its partners will empower children and adults with knowledge and skills on issues like positive parenting, life skills and early warning and detection systems for child abuse and neglect.
  • Linking partners with specific expertise to organised groups in the community to make sure that children have access to medical, legal, psychosocial and rehabilitative support.
  • Advocacy; ICS will advocate on different levels for adequate implementation of existing laws, policies, traditional practices and complimentary structures that protect children.

The programme is implemented together with local partners in Western Kenya and Northern Tanzania. In addition to our specialized partners on child protection in Tanzania and Uganda.
